My Role Expands To Executive Producer For Live Broadcasts At The University Of Portsmouth
Since the start of 2018, I have been involved in 6 live television broadcasts that have seen transmission on the Big Screen Portsmouth to 250,000 people*. My involvement in these programmes saw my role expand to more of an Executive Producer for Live Broadcasts role.
I am invited by the Executive Producers of the shows to oversee rehearsals and make comments on the programmes that students at the University of Portsmouth have put together. The students then have one week to make minor or major changes before we broadcast them live.
It's important that the students receive the critical feedback from someone like myself, as these shows are being broadcast on the Big Screen and therefore must appeal to a wider audience demographic, than just undergraduates at the university.
Each group is assigned an interesting subject matters to work towards and then produce their presentation by means of a television show in a 30 minute live broadcast.
With my influence this year, the students also had to account for a 4 minute advert break, similar to the ones you would find on ITV, Channel 4, or any commercial television channel. Doing this adds two key skills to their CV. One, script-writing to an advert break and two, back timing. It's important for each show to run on time and hopefully this unit within the BSc Television and Broadcasting course offers them invaluable industry experience.
All 6 shows were broadcast live on the Big Screen Portsmouth and will now repeat throughout the summer as additional content. With their strong "Portsmouth" themes, these shows sit perfectly within the Big Screen schedule that plays daily between 7am and 11pm.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues and Executive Producers, Gary Bown, Mike Parsons and Louise Lovesey for inviting me to be apart of these broadcasts as part of my job role as well as commend them for their outstanding work.
Three further live broadcasts are scheduled for the coming weeks and I'm sure I'll share more information on these as we soon approach them.
